With summer fast approaching, our eagerness to don a bathing suit and head to the beach grows by the day. But with so much Norfolk coastline to choose from, it’s sometimes hard to find the perfect location. So we’ve picked our four favourite Norfolk beaches to make the choice a little easier.
Holkham
Holkham Beach was voted ‘Best Beach in the UK’ in a survey of travel writers and with good reason. As the golden beach at Holkham is one of most beautiful stretches of coastline in Norfolk if not the UK. Its unspoiled sandy banks are very well maintained and usually very quiet. It’s also been featured on the big screen, as actress Gwyneth Paltrow can be seen walking across the beach in the closing scenes of the film ‘Shakespeare in Love.’ Holkham beach welcomes everyone as it is dog and horse friendly so, grab the family and head to down to Holkham.
Cromer
One of the busiest beaches in Norfolk, Cromer attracts thousands of visitors every year and it a great place to have fun with the family. It’s sand and shingle beach is popular amongst holidaymakers as it has a variety of attractions. The water is great for swimming and surfing, whilst the rock pools are perfect for crabbing. Further along the beach is the famous Cromer Pier. This traditional Victorian pier is over 150 metres long and has a restaurant, bar, and a theatre at the far end which regularly plays host to the only end-of-the-pier show in the world, the Cromer Pier Show.
Brancaster
Another beautiful Norfolk beach can be found at Brancaster. The untouched golden sand stretches for miles which make it a popular destination for dog walkers. Strolling east along the beach, you will notice a shipwreck when the tide is out. This is the remains of the SS Vina, which was accidentally sunk in 1944 and has since been stranded on one of the many sandbanks in the area. Further along the beach, you can spot the offshore barrier island, Scolt Head. Brancaster is a great beach to explore, however, if you’re planning a trip there, it’s important to check the tide times first as the high spring tide may flood the road to the beach, leaving you stranded in the car park.
Wells-next-the-Sea
Just down the road from the town of Wells-next-the-Sea is the lovely beach. This is another popular beach amongst locals, holidaymakers, and dog walkers. There is a well-sized car park just behind the beach so you won’t tire yourself out getting there. The sandy beach has plenty of space to explore or if you’re one for relaxing, the beach is lined with pretty beach huts, many of which can be hired for the day.
