The civil parish of Long Stratton consists of two villages; the larger, Stratton St. Mary to the south, and Stratton St. Michael to the North. Together, they have a population of approximately 4,400 over an area of 10km2.
The village accommodates three schools; an infant, middle and high school which educates the young resident of Long Stratton and the surrounding areas. The residents also benefit from a range of shopping facilities, including two small shopping centres. There are also two pubs, The Queens Head and The Swan, as well as Netherton House restaurant, all located in Long Stratton. Other local amenities including a Doctor’s surgery and a leisure centre.
Long Stratton is easily accessible as the A140 runs through part of the village. Originally a Roman Road, the A140 runs from Ipswich to Cromer, and the villages name is derived from its location on this route. As ‘Stratton’ derives from the Latin word ‘Stratum’, meaning paved way, and ‘Long’ refers to the length of the two parishes which stretch over two miles. Both parishes contain churches which hold historical significance. St Mary’s is a Norman building with the church clock dating from 1722. It also contains one of only two Sexton’s wheels left in the world. St Michael’s on the other hand, was built from flint much later.
