The harbour town of Wells-next-the-Sea is located on the North Norfolk coast between Holkham Beach and Blakeney. Its name originated in the Domesday Book and is named after the numerous fresh springs that were once seen on parts of the coast. The town has gained in popularity as a holiday destination as it has a range of attractions and facilities suitable for anyone visiting the coast.
The working port and harbour at Wells-next-the-Sea are overshadowed by the giant granary with a gantry reaching across the street to the Quay opposite. Until recent years, Wells was a busy manufacturing town, supplying malt to London and Dutch breweries. Although this is no longer the case, the town has still kept its character and still thrives through its busy harbour, local business, and popular holiday facilities. There’s an amusement arcade, traditional fish and chips, ice cream, and sweet shops to enjoy.
Heading away from the Quay, down the narrow streets and historic alleyways, the town’s centre is a beautiful green space, known as The Butlands, fringed with lime trees and is enclosed by grand Victorian houses. There are a variety of local shops and businesses in the town including, traditional butchers, bakers, and fishmongers, as well as shops selling all the holidaying essentials and gifts. During the summer the residents and visitors at Wells can enjoy the traditional carnival. Its various events include live music, workshops, and a disco.
A mile from the town is the beautiful beach. Complete with a small forest of pine trees and an endless row of colourful beach huts, this stretch of coast is very popular in Norfolk. It’s accessible by car, foot and by the miniature train that stretches from one end of the town centre to the beach.
