Nelson and Norfolk Exhibition

Tricolour flag at the Nelson and Norfolk Exhibition

From the 29th of July to the 1st of October, Norwich Castle will play host to the Nelson and Norfolk Exhibition. Curated by the Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery, this exhibition pays homage to Admiral Lord Nelson and his love for his native county of Norfolk. The exhibition features a number of historical objects connected to Nelson and his life, with the featured piece of the exhibition being a huge French Tricolour flag measuring 16 metre by 8 metres, which was captured from the French warship, Le Genereux, by Nelson’s men during the Battle of Malta Convoy in 1880. It was then gifted to the city of Norwich by one of Nelsons most trusted Captains, Sir Edward Berry. This battle holds historical significance for Lord Nelson, as the British victory confirmed Nelson’s reputation as one of England’s greatest heroes.

Also on display is the musket ball that killed Nelson during the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.  As well as this, a number of personal artefacts belonging to Nelson himself are displayed. These include the coat and hat he wore during the Battle of the Nile, and a locket believed to contain a lock of Nelson’s hair alongside a lock of hair from his love, Emma Hamilton. These are just a few of the 160 artefacts on display at the exhibition, spread across Norwich Castle, with different sections examining key parts of Nelson’s life, from his childhood in Burnham Thorpe to his death at the battle of Trafalgar. The Norfolk section shows Nelson connection and love of Norfolk. Included in this section is the Burnham Thorpe Parish Register which has been annotated by Nelson’s father. Alongside the register is the ‘Dear, dear Burnham letter’ written by Nelson in 1804.
