The Golden Triangle is one of the most popular areas within the city of Norwich. The wedge-shaped area starts at the edge of the city centre, spreading outwards between Newmarket Road and Earlham Road, with Unthank Road said to be the centre of the Golden Triangle.
History of the Golden Triangle
The popularity of this area is thought to date back to the early to mid 1800s when the Golden Triangle referred to the area between Newmarket Road, Ipswich Road and Lime Tree Road. At the time, wealthy professionals started to populate the area as it had the benefits of living close to the city, whilst avoiding the cramped and unhygienic conditions seen within the city walls. The houses within the area are mainly Victorian and terrace properties built in the late 1800s and early 1900s when Norwich was gaining in popularity and rapidly expanding.
The term ‘Golden Triangle’ was first used in the 1980s by estate agents and refers to the triangle shaped area and the ‘golden’ price tag of the area.
Today, the Golden Triangle is still one of the most sought-after areas of Norwich; however, its residency is much different to that of the 1800s with students, professionals, and families populating the area. Facilities in the Golden Triangle include a variety of local businesses: convenience shops, eateries, clothing shops, parks, and of course, plenty of pubs.
The active community and friendly atmosphere are very apparent in the area, with a number of small festivals being hosted during the summer months. This had led to the area being dubbed as the ‘Notting Hill of Norwich’, as well as the Golden Triangle featuring in the Sunday Times top 101 best places to live in Britain.
