The largest of the Norfolk Broads, Hickling Broad is a haven for beautiful landscapes and a variety of landscapes. The broad is located on the Upper Thurne river system which makes it one of the largest expanses of open water in East Anglia. It’s approximately 2 miles south of the village of Hickling and 5 miles south-east of Stalham. It was originally established by English Nature and is currently maintained by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust. The broad is home to a variety of fantastic wildlife all year round. The Most noticeable wildlife living in the broad is the large numbers of common crane, bittern, marsh harrier, Cetti’s warbler, and barn owls. In winter, the reed beds, which are the largest in England, become a popular roosting spot for marsh harrier, merlin, and hen harrier. Hickling Broad is also home to plenty of mammals including Chinese water deer, red deer, and otters (although you’d be lucky to spot one). Of course the broad is also home to plenty of insects, most notably the local swallowtail butterfly and the Norfolk hawker dragonfly.
Boat tours of the broad are also available, giving you the chance to explore the waterways and get up close to the wildlife. The newly built on-site visitor’s centre gives you a chance to learn about the history of Hickling Broad and its wildlife. Also present on the broad are bird watching hides overlooking a number of pools.
